Thanks to my wonderful friend ~KES, the video from August 15, 2009 of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock is up on youtube.

A producer from GMA saw my Woodstock photos on my personal website and asked if the one of me could be used in the photo montage from the original event in 1969.
I had no idea how it would be used for the anniversary show, but was thrilled when it was with Richie Havens singing his classic Woodstock song.

Now I'm thrilled that Kathy took so much of her time and energy to make this happen for me. I am eternally grateful to her for this gift.

My 3rd Anniversary with ZnG

It's an auspicious day for me because it was 3 years ago today that I was invited into Zaadz by my good friend, Renie.
Back in those days it was invitation only to join the group.
I liked that. If you were invited, that meant someone felt you were worthy to be here. That your life energy, your work, would benefit Zaadz in some unique way.

I took to Zaadz like a bear to the woods and immediately felt home here.
I had to choose an icon that I felt represented me and I chose the one I call the Valentine Kid. This is a photo of me at about 4 years old,

ready to take off down the road with my pail and sneakers, all I needed.
Always itching with wanderlust.

About 10 years ago, my dear friend Bobby created a Valentine gift for me with my photo. It immediately became my favorite icon.
That's me, ready to fill the bucket of life and beam out big hearts.

That is what I wanted to do here in this network of light bearers.

The early days were fun and easy.
I came in with about 16,000 members on August 23, 2006.
We all did know each other on one level or another.
Zaady was the mascot of fun.

We've shared many fun parties, deep discussions, some misunderstanding, Gaia Gatherings, friends here dying, friends here marrying, friends leaving.
But we always know that we have each other's back when the chips are down.
Someone will step in and smooth over a rocky post, or a misunderstanding.
For this I remain grateful. There have been a few people that have gifted me that.

Since the days of corporate take over, we have paid a price.
Much more advertising, not all coming from places like EnlightenNext or Shambala magazines.
Many Zaadzters and now Gaian's have gone to Facebook.
This I don't understand.
Why leave a place most of us still try to nurture and continue on with the mission of Zaadz, to... BE THE CHANGE.

I'm grateful I'm still here.
I'm grateful you're still here.
I'm grateful we can still be ourselves and reach for the stars.
And lead others to do the same...
Thank you Gaia team for all you do here to keep us up and running...

As for me, I was 22 and my best friend Bonnie and I had left NJ to head to California in early summer of '69.
Once there we found out about the Woodstock Festival. So we hopped back in our VW minivan and hit the road back to NY!
We got there early enough in the week to get into the site, and parked the bus on some local guys property for the weekend.
set up a base camp near the HOG FARM and headed into our future.
in the words of our beloved ARLO GUTHRIE, "MAN, ALOTTA FREAKS!"
it was ~FaR oUt~!

The world has never been the same and neither have we!
We wanted things to change.

I remember sitting in the field waiting for the bands to start
and someone started making peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches
and we'd take a bite and pass it on. food was getting rare,
and the stands that were set up were such a hassle to get to cause you had to walk over so many people, it was hardly worth tryin. when you got up there the line was killer anyway, so we just all shared food!

I have many stories of that weekend.
Fell in love a thousand times with guys who would walk by and we'd lock eye contact and keep walking.
It was constant connecting. walking by and touching or looking deep at each others eyes and moving onto the next person to share with as they walked by.
There was a purity of the spirit there. a genuine sharing of soul. my life changed there,
I quit smoking cigarettes on an acid trip,
we paid $5 to a farmer with a tractor to tow our van out of the mud after Woodstock ended,
and we made it into the movie!
right after SHA NA NA and before Joe Cocker!
We're doing YOGA with Tom Law, I'm the one with the headband on!

My biggest story on Woodstock is that I was admiring a girl there
for days thinking she was so cool.
(In the movie, she has on the fringed halter and short skirt
that's dancing wildly with Fantuzzi, the guy with the big hair waving his arms around).
Anyway, I thought she was the coolest and at one point,
she entered into a camp I was at.
I offered her one of my Kool cigarettes.
She said 'I don't smoke cigarettes'.
I thought 'WOW! I want to be more cool like her'.
I was on acid at the time and it really made an impact!
So...that's when I quit smoking!!!
On an acid trip at Woodstock!

One of the most famous mantras in Tibet is the mantra of Padmasambhava, called the Vajra Guru Mantra, OM AH HUM VAJRA GURU PADMA SIDDHI HUM. Like most mantras, it is in Sanskrit, the ancient sacred language of India. The mantra of Padmasambhava is the mantra of all the buddhas, masters, and realized beings, and so uniquely powerful for peace, for healing, for transformation and for protection in this violent, chaotic age.

The Vajra Guru mantra, OM AH HUM VAJRA GURU PADMA SIDDHI HUM, is pronounced by Tibetans: Om Ah Hung Benza Guru Pema Siddhi Hung. This exploration of its meaning is based on explanations by
Dudjom Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

In the spring of 1973 i was on Mt. Shasta and i heard singing through the trees.
i followed the sound through the meadows and found a school bus painted with YEA GOD on it and a far out group of people singing songs to God.
i spent the next few days with these people,
but they were on their way to New York City to see their teacher who just returned from India.

As they were boarding the bus for the cross country trip,
i stood at the door hugging each one goodbye. there was a man named Gentle Bear,
and we hugged and i said "You give good bear hugs"
and he said "You give good bear hugs too, you must be Ladybear".
everyone there said ... "Yeah, Ladybear" ! the name stuck.

So since 1973 i have been known by Ladybear. :)

i ended up following that bus to New York City
and found my new teacher sitting on a park bench at 86th St. and Central Park West.
He was silent and taught us to communicate with a fun sign language
that he created so we could all communicate
with each other and translate for him.
HE RADIATED JOY.
i had never been near anyone like him before. it was contagious.
in India he became "enlightened" by his Guru, Satya Sai Baba.
He asked Baba to make him free, and he did.
Sai Baba changed his name to Freedom.
Freedom was an amazing man and it was a magical time.
we stayed at Central Park and celebrities would come by and see Freedom,
and the Yea God family would sing all the time.
the police would watch out for us and come to sit on the corner asking questions about God.
within a few weeks of meeting Freedom and the family
i was on my way overland to see Sai Baba for myself.

In early 1972 I was brought to my first Yoga teacher.
His name was Swami Rudi and to get to his ashram
I was first brought to him at his store, RUDI ORIENTAL ART.

It was on the lower east side of New York's Greenwich Village.
Rudi allowed me to attended his birthday party that night
and it was there that I was initiated by him into Kundalini Yoga.
From that night on my life changed. I knew I was Awakened.

Rudi was a true New Yorker. AKA Swami Rudrananda.

He use to sit on his chair at the back of the art store,
with his mother there sitting close by watching.
When you walked in, you had to walk up the long aisle to him in the back.

Watching him watch you as you passed all, & I mean thousands of pieces,
of Oriental art objects straight out of temples and shrines.
The energy was pure power.

Lifesized Buddha's & Flying Garuda's

Shiva's, Krishna's, Mahakala's & all sorts of protectors of the dharma.
It was quite intimidating for a hippie chick, a novice spiritual babe from New Jersey.

You could not go to the house without meeting him at the store first & getting his
approval to accept you as a student.
I didn't realize that was what was happening to me at the time,
but the night of his birthday party, I found that out!

The first time I went to his house we all stood in a circle.
Rudi was meeting with people up in his room.
If I remember correctly, this was before I was called upstairs.
During the circle of about 25 people, every now and then
someone would fall face first to the floor.
I was startled & my first reaction was to pick them up & see if they were OK.
I didn't know they were having a Kundalini shakti flattening them to the floor!

Bubba Free John was also a student of Rudi's.
I went back many many times for the yoga group meetings and teachings.
I'd stop in to see Rudi at the store during the day if I was running around
Greenwich Village.

Being accepted by Rudi linked me to his lineage.
From Nityananda to Muktananda, whom I spent some time with also,
but that's another story.

On Feb. 21, 1973 Rudi died in a small plane crash in the Catskills.
He was dictating a journal entry, and his last words were,
"...a deeper sense of surrender".

We were also linked through one of the most important teachers in
New York at the time

HILDA CHARLTON.

Hilda held a wonderful satsang at St. Luke's Church in Greenwich Village weekly.
Sometimes Ram Dass would show up with his singers Amazing Grace
& the room was always filled with wonder & mysterious things happening.

One time after a few hours of singing bhajans, we were all mediating and Hilda saw
Maharaji in the room with us. When we opened our eyes, we all had pieces of
Maharaji's blanket surrounding us. Little pieces of fluffy fabric were all over the floor.
I still have mine in my Bhakti Book!

I've been blessed to have lived in a time of AWAKENING.
So many of us came out of the 60's into a spiritual life,
while others stayed in drugs or alcohol & perished.

I have been blessed to be with many of the power house teachers.
For this I am very grateful.

Karmapa XVI 1976

I was with His Holiness Karmapa XVI a few different times,
but the most personal was at 6 AM on Maui 1976.

My partner at the time was a grounds keeper at a condo complex on Maui.
When H.H. Karmapa came to Maui to do the Vajra Crown ceremony,
we were very active with the people hosting H.H. and owned the dharma center
property there.
We had been preparing the property for his visit for a week or more,
creating pathways and general clean up.

His arrival was such a thrill.
To greet him, along with a very young Jamgon Kontroul III,
and the rest of the monks in Karmapa's entourage.

I remember standing on the line as he passed for the blessing of the kata offerings
& placed them over our heads.

Following his arrival, a small group of us sat on the hillside watching them all
eat a lunch... of meat!
I forget if it was chicken or beef. But I was surprised to see that Karmapa ate meat.

The Vajra Crown Ceremony was beautiful.
This video shows his arrival at the site just before the ceremony.

It was done at consecrated land in Lahina on the opposite side of the island from where they were staying.
One day during their visit, there was a storm and driving back out past Haiku, we stopped at the beach and watched Karmapa as he and the monks watched the breaking 50 foot waves.
It was quite a sight to see these wonderful Tibetan monks,
and an incarnated Buddha, robes blowing in the wind, while standing in front of breaking waves 50 feet high!

There are some photos at this website of another event that happened while
H.H. was on this trip. Consecrating land for a stupa.

A few days following, Karmapa and his entourage were to leave Maui and they had been staying at the condo's where my partner worked.

We went to his condo to wait for the car to take him and the monks to the airport.
Because of the hour, it was just Karmapa, 4 monks, my partner and I on the porch
at 6 AM waiting for the car.

The Karmapa asked me to remove my Tibetan necklace & he played with it laughing
& trying to discern what stones were on it.
We knew the turquoise and coral, but the other stone, that looked like seeds, were a mystery to us all.

JUST BEING THERE with him was all emcompassing.
I still get excited when I think of that moment.

It didn't have to be a great dharmic Initiation,
it was just being present in the moment that was comforting & enlightening.
Each time I hold that necklace in my hand, I can see The Karmapa twirling it in his fingers.

Rolling Stones Summer in the City

The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City (1966 color clip)

I came upon this song today by one of my favorite bands, John Sebastian and
The Lovin Spoonful.
It was 1966 and whenever I hear this song I think of what I was doing that summer in New York City. I was living the life of a wild one in Manhattan.

I had a 1963 green Corvette convertible, lots of Mod clothes,
wearing 4 pairs of false eyelashes like Twiggy,

Retro 60's makeup, with dark eyeliner and mascara, artificial eyelashes, and pale pink lipstick. Fab. Simply fab.

A Vidal Sassoon haircut,

Hanging at the clubs in New York City.
The Scene, The Electric Circus on St. Marks Place, The Cheetah,
The Go Go, The Riveria & Peppermint Lounge. There were alot of clubs every night!

One night in particular I was at a place, that summer it was "THE PLACE", called
Ondines.

I was all decked out and in my best “it's ok, i'm with the band”, going with Steve Curry, the lead singer of the house band named The Denims.
A couple of years later Steve was playing Woof in the original
production of HAIR on Broadway!

Steve Curry is in the middle with my buddy Steve Gamet on top of the pyramid.
Because I was with the band, I got to stay after hours in Ondines.

<Ondines was owned by the guy that produced HAIR, Michael Butler.>

One night there was a big buzz. We had to clear the front bar room and put up a
long table covered with tapestry cloth and a big hooka pipe in the middle.

Remember, it's the summer of 1966, days of the song
"Mother's Little Helper" and the band was on tour.
about 4 AM in come The Rolling Stones.

ALL IN DRAG!

Mick was with the Queen of New York at the time named Terry Noel . Both in full drag.
Brian Jones was still alive.
We all sat at the long table and smoked opium and did poppers (amyl nitrate)

I don't remember much else of it all, except I kept saying to myself,
I can't believe I'm getting stoned with the Rolling Stones!!!

UFO's on Mt. Shasta

I was telling a friend some stories today and I shared some about seeing UFO's when I was living up on Mt. Shasta. Thought I might as well share them here too.

I use to live out on Mt Shasta all summer, every summer.
In April or May i'd come back from Maui, Guatemala, New York, or wherever I'd been that winter and head up the mountain.
Mt. Shasta is a spiritual mountain. It's said to be one of the 7 chakras of the world.

I'd camp at the lower elevations and move up as the snow melted. By summer's end i'd be at 8500' in the high meadows called Squaw Valley.

Most often I'd stay at 7600' called Panther Meadow. (It was closer to the road to hitch down to town.) There are alot of mystical stories about ascended master, St. Germain appearing to people at Panther Meadow.

One UFO story is when I was at Panther Meadow. My camp was always right on the left of this photo, just in the trees where it looks black on the left there.

There was a group of us that camped all summer, we each had our own camp, but we shared a kitchen, food, and campfire at night.
We were sitting around the campfire one night telling stories and saw lights hovering on top of Grey Butte Ridge. The lights moved like a helicopter would, but it was dead silent.
They were colored lights, and moving slowly.

The top of this ridge was about 1/4 mile from where we all were sitting.
it was about 10 PM.
We really did think it was a helicopter at first, but that wouldn't be silent.
This just HOVERED slowly. Then it disappeared. There were about 8-9 of us sitting there and we all saw it very clearly.

The more personal story was when I was back in Squaw Valley camping.

That is a higher elevation, much more clear energy and only a couple of other people in the area, But not with me at the time.

You have to know that there are endless stories of UFO encounters on Shasta.
Shasta is known for being a refueling center for them.

Anyway, back to Squaw. I was gathering wood for the evening campfire.
I was naked, walking around my camp, it was about 5 PM in the early evening.
Still very light, not dark.
I happened to look up and about 100 feet from me, on the side of the ridge was a shimmering small circular ship.

I felt no fear.

I knew it was watching me and I bowed, hands folded (pranam) to it.
and it PULSATED LIGHT back to me a couple of times.
Then I watched it go INTO the side of the ridge of the mountain!

I am NOT lying, this really did happen up on Mt. Shasta! :-)

Shasta gets Lenticular clouds that look like ships and it's believed that ships hide inside of them when they are going into the mountain for refueling.

Vajrayana

Vajrayana is well defined by wikipedia.

The five vows to be held by upasakas are referred to as the "Five Precepts"

I will not take the life of a sentient being;
I will not take what has not been given to me;
I will refrain from sexual misconduct;
I will refrain from false speech;
I will refrain from becoming intoxicated.

In 1976, I was initiated into the Kagyu Lineage of Buddhism by this Nun,

Sister Gelongma Karma Khechog Palmo.
Or Mummy as she was affectionately called.

She had been personal secretary to H.H. Gyalwa Karmapa
& came to Mt. Shasta on a little vacation. I had wanted to take refuge for awhile, & this was finally my opportunity.

I met with her privately up on the mountain at first, she interviewed me & then told me to come to her hotel room the next morning. Lucky for me, I did.

At the time I took refuge, Sister Palmo cut my hair & I was given the Tibetan name

Taking refuge in the Triple Jewel gives a person many things.

For me it gave me a belonging to the lineage of my Karma Kagyu Lamas with whom I
have been blessed & protected by for all these years.

It also gave me purpose.
Purpose to not lie or cheat people, to be sober, to speak of the dharma &
to encourage people. To do kind things.

Before taking refuge, as a hippie + yogi, I tried to do these things, but I would get stoned,
& party to much, got lost in the wild 70's, but taking refuge made me get serious.
I didn't really realize it at the time.

I remember Mummy telling me I had to leave my Hindu Guru behind now, but I didn't understand why.
But as I matured in my sadhana, I understood the committment I had made to
The Triple Jewel.

Being with Karmapa, seeing & feeling Kalu Rinpoche's kindness to me,
& the joy of just seeing the smiling face of Jamgon Kontroul

made me want to practice the dharma.

Time with The Dalai Lama

The photo above is of Lama Govinda with Dr. Ajari Warwick.
Dr. Ajari was always in the middle of everything that was happening in the
San Francisco area.

I first met him on Alan Watt's houseboat when Lama Govinda was staying there.
Dr. Ajari & I got into an argument about Sai Baba. Turned out he was right.

Back in the '70's, all the yoga centers had his phone number next to the
phone in case of emergency.
He financially supported many of the Lama's visits to the US with his business called
"The Golden Nagas".
I think they were the original futon company in SF.

All this excitement about H.H. D. L. being here in the US has stirred some memories.
In 1979 when H.H. was in San Francisco I was connected with the group of Fire Walking Buddhists, led by Buddhist priest, Dr. Ajari Warwick.
Dr. Ajari and I have a karmic connection.
This brought me into some interesting & wonderful situations.

Dr. Ajari brought a small group of us to the San Francisco City Center when H.H. was meeting with then Mayor Diane Feinstein.
We went upstairs into the mayor's office with H.H. while he & the mayor visited.

The following day H.H. was giving a seminar at a seminary in Mill Valley where I was desperately trying to get a KATA scarf to H.H.

The security was unbelievable, even with snipers on the roofs.
I still could not get that kata to His Holiness.
I had not brought it with me the day before to the mayor's office!
But this turned out to be a blessing.

So here it is Sunday. We go to Oakland for H.H. to give a lecture.
We arrange the flowers on the stage.
This lecture was following a concert there by the Christian singer Andre Crouch.
Andre comes up to me preaching that if I don't accept JC as my Saviour
i'm going to burn in hell.
Well thanks for the warning buddy, but i'm sticking with loving compassion.
We continue to arrange the flowers.

H.H. is about the arrive. We take our seats in the first and second rows with
Dr. Ajari sitting on the stage.
His Holiness speaks and the thing I remember the most out of all of the lecture was
him saying not to be attached to loyalty to 'your' country.
This too changes and is illusion.

Well the lecture is about to end, I see H.H. is getting up with the crowd standing,
the security all around him, I make a mad dash from my seat to the steps
where he will come off the stage to leave & get into the car.

Now at this time I was just recovering from my last dose of chemotherapy
and my hair was about 1/4" long,
I was wearing a yellow Tibetan chuba dress with my arms & the Kata extended
out to H.H.

I get to the side of the bottom stair as H.H. gets there and he catches me out of his
peripheral vision.
He stops, leans over to me, blesses my head and places the Kata back
around my shoulders.

I WAS IN BLISS!!!

A priest friend, Keisho, was with us that day & wrote me last night adding this.

Thanks for your April 13 blog. I was there too and remember the Dalai
Lama's talk, but a different part than you remembered. I was struck,
pleasantly surprised, that he talked directly about the rivalry and
infighting going on among the Buddhist community, and urged them to live
in harmony.
